You may hear a lot of talk about 'link building' or link popularity, or about getting links from other sites.

That's because links from other high quality sites have a big impact in helping your site show up higher in search results:

1. If you have more links on the search topic than your competitors do, Your page will more likely show up above your competitors in search engine results
2. There is no bigger benefit to your power to outrank your competitors than one-way links from other high-ranking, trusted sites using your primary key words to link to you
3. A link from another well-visited site will bring a portion of the web traffic to your site.

You may not know who is linking to your site. But you can find out with a few tools:

Google Search

To see a partial list of links almost instantly: do the following search in Google

link:yourdomain.com

Replace 'yourdomain.com' with the domain you want to find links to.

Google reveals only a partial list with this technique. But it does enable you to check quickly for the presence of any links if you're curious.

Google Webmaster Tools

Requires a Google Webmaster Account

For a bit more of a complete list, submit your site to Google using Google Webmaster Tools. The steps involve verifying your site with Google, which you can follow with a simple step-by-step process. You will need to be able to copy a file onto your web server, or have the tools and skill to change your website header to use Google Webmaster Tools.

But once you have an account, and the Googlebot has crawled your pages, you have 'insider access' to a larger portion of Google's data about your site.

Log into your Google Webmaster Tools account, and look at "your site on the web" in the left side menu. One option is: "links to your site" You will see a list of sites linking to your site.

It's a more complete list than you'll see from a Google 'link:' search. But it's still not necessarily complete.

Yahoo Site Explorer

The most complete list from a free tool (that I know of ) comes from Yahoo's Site Explorer. You do need to be logged into a (free) Yahoo account. Go to Go to http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/ and put the URL you want to check into the simple input box. Click "explore URL"

The results include a list of your pages and the external site providing the source of the link.

To see only the links coming in from other sites (and not your navigation between your own pages), you have to change the default display settings.

Change the "showInlinks" settings to "Except from this domain" and "entire site".

Wordtracker Link Builder

Though not a free service (after your free trial expires) the WordTracker link builder tool is for the hardcore link explorer. Not only does it generate the most complete list of inbound links I can get to date. It also sorts the inbound links from most to least valuable to you in terms of benefit in helping you rank better. And you can see what link text the external link sources used to link to your site.

You can also see in turn how many other sites link to the people who link to you!

It can take a bit of a learning curve to use this tool. But if you're bound and determined to comb the web, looking for the relationships between sites that lies beneath the surface, this tool will turn over the rocks for you.

No matter what your level of interest in finding who's linking to you, there's a tool to give you an answer.

To sum up, here is a chart showing how these 5 tools compare in showing you who links to your website. Or any website you wish to check, including your competitor's.

Comparison chart: How complete is the list of links from 4 different tools?

Links shown for a real anonymous test site, Anonymous.com

1) Google Search link:anonymous.com:

24 links (of 62 counted)

2) Google Webmaster tools

28 links

3) Yahoo Site Explorer:

58 links

4) Wordtracker Link Builder:

56 sites bringing a total of 129 links

Summary:

Of the free tools available to help you check links:

Yahoo Site Explorer - may give you the highest count of links. But no free tool promises to give you a complete list of links to your site.

It's important to know that not all links show up when you check for them using free tools.

Does your website promote a shop, or business premises where you sell your services or products? If so, I am sure that your customers would find it useful to see a location map. They may be more likely to visit you if they can see at a glance where you are and also get directions whilst on the same web page! I can tell you now, this can be done very quickly and easily, and is totally free!

Many people when looking for directions will just get out an A-Z map, or go to a routefinder website. But did you know that Google have a great map system, and I find it very quick and easy to use. Google Maps can be used by potential customers to search for a business in a specific geographical location. You can add your own business to the listings, so that it would appear in search results, although you don't need to do this to add a link to a Google Map showing your business location. Google say that their maps cover the following regions:

Andorra, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Istanbul, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Moscow, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and US.

Once you are in Google Maps, follow these instructions to link to a location map from your website:

1. Enter your post/zip code in the search box.
2. Click search and wait for your map to appear.
3. On the top right-hand corner of the page, right-click on "Link to this page",
4. Select "Copy shortcut" or you can just copy the URL from your browser's address bar.
5. Then to add the link on your own website, type a suitable description, such as "Visit our Shop". Add a hyperlink and paste the url by right-clicking and selecting "Paste". If you have a photo of your premises on your website, you could also add the hyperlink to the picture.

If you wish to add a business listing to Google Maps, so that you may be found in the Google Maps search results, this is quite easy:

1. On the Google Maps page, at the bottom left of the page, click on "Business Owners - Add/Edit Your Business".
2. This takes you to the Local Business Center, and you will be asked to log in to your Google Account - if you use Google Adwords or Adsense, you can use the same email address and password.
3. Once logged in, under the "Locations" tab, click on "Add new business".
4. Then enter your business name, and address. Make sure you enter the full postal address, as Google will send an activation PIN to the address you enter.
5. You can create separate listings for each of your business locations.
6. Click "Continue"
7. You then add your phone number, and have the option to add your email and website address, and a description of your business, which will appear on the listing found by your customers. You have 200 characters for the description, so use keywords relevant to your business.
8. You can then indicate which forms of payment your company accepts, such as American Express etc.
9. Enter your opening hours if you wish (optional).
10. Enter a contact name (this is optional and won't appear on Google Maps).
11. Click "Continue".
12. Select a relevant category for your listing - you may select up to 5 different categories.
13. You then see a preview of your listing and may edit it if you wish. Once you are happy with the listing, click "Continue".
14. You now wait for up to 2 weeks for Google to send you an activation PIN. You then follow the instructions in the letter to validate your listing before it will appear in Google Maps search results.

Backlinking is one of the most important methods of obtaining SEO success. A very important question you must ask yourself is, "How do I get quality backlinks, and increase my blog's exposure so I can be found in Google?" Before we get into this topic, it is extremely important to know what a backlink is.

A backlink is simply a link that is from another site that is pointed back to your blog or website page. Backlinks are crucial since they help you rank well in search engines, aka Google - the king. Everyone wants the king to know them personally, so you can see how proper backlinking is important. There are many ways to get valid backlinks to your site and I suggest that you start building backlinks naturally for the first few months.

First, I recommend writing articles and submitting them to various directories, such as eZine or Buzzle. Post your unique articles to Buzzle first since they do not allow duplicate content on the web. After your article is accepted and submitted, (you will automatically get a backlink) then post it on your blog and eZine, along with a few other if you want to. This is the first step to building backlinks. Submitting to article directories is essential since it will easily help build traffic to your site. Don't think this works? Well my friend, you ARE reading this article right now on eZine are you not??

The next step is to submit your site to link directories. If you are not sure where to find them, just Google link directories and many will come up. This process submits your link to hundreds of link directories online. The only downside is that this process can take weeks for your blog/site to get approved and you don't know where your link is going to be anchored. Another downside is that you don't know the pagerank of the sites your link will be on. As you can see this is a long and tedious process - so another option that is available is purchasing backlinks. Do NOT get suckered into ads that say "Get 1,000 backlinks for $9.99? or some other crap like that. It is a scam and you will get ripped off - not to mention you might get banned from Google and never have your site indexed, which means no one will ever find your blog. Buying backlinks are expensive - plain and simple. There is a good old saying "quality vs quantity" and that holds true. If you want to get a backlink from a site that has a page rank of 5 or above expect to pay for it. Pagerank is based on a value from 0 to 10. The majority of sites are ranked 0-2 and those backlinks will obviously be cheaper. ONE link from a site that has a pagerank of 6 is equal to 91,414 links from a website that has a pagerank of ONE! Realize that there are millions of pages that are ranked ZERO. This example is given for a site with a pagerank of 1.

The biggest benefit of buying quality backlinks are traffic and search engine exposure. Even with unique content on your site - chances are that someone somewhere else did the same exact thing. So how does your site become shown on Google? With quality backlinks - which will improve your chances of being displayed on the first page in Google. I suggest setting aside a certain budget each month to build quality backlinks. DO NOT spend a ton of money right away and say you are done. Those links will look unnatural and will raise a red flag in search engines. Start out small - buy 20 or 30 backlinks from a pagerank 3,4, or 5. You can find quality backlinks on various forums or you can find link brokers online.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Research the places you are considering buying backlinks from. How long have they been around? What pagerank will they submit your links to?

ASK QUESTIONS. If they don't answer them - MOVE ON. Then keep track of your progress with Google webmaster or yahoo site explorer. Did this work? Did you see an increase in traffic? Are people returning back to your page as new content is posted? If so, then buy another X amount the next month and keep building more and more. As time progresses and you keep adding quality content you will see improvements and you own pagerank will improve

Link Building can be tedious boring and at times it might seem like a waste of energy. However, over time it can be one of the most profitable activities of your business. See, backlinks will increase your link popularity which in turn will increase your Google Page Rank.

Although Page Rank is no longer the Alfa and the Omega of SEO, it is still a good indication of just how popular your site is with the search engines. The majority of your Page Rank is determined by backlinks. You simply cannot increase Google Page Rank without getting back links to your site.

Most people make the mistake of blindly diving into link building - hoping that it will help their search engine ranking. Unfortunately not all links are good links. Here are 5 very important tips you need to stick to when building links to your site.

1. Focus on relevant links
Google's bot is getting smarter and one of the big things for the future of backlinks is relevancy. Focus on getting links from relevant sites that are similar to yours. Backlinks from relevant sites has more linkjuice and will get a higher value than random links from unrelated sites.

2. Avoid nofollow links
Many sites now have the "nofollow" tag which was originally introduced to deter spammers from posting random links everywhere. The nofollow tag means that a link won't be accredited as a backlink, so when you do get links from nofollow sites they will be worthless from an SEO point of view.

3. Use anchor text
Anchor text is very important in building quality back links. The anchor text the text that contains the link and Google assigns a lot of value to a link with anchor text. Using your keywords as anchor text in your back links is a great way to add linkjuice to your backlinks.

4. Get links from high Page Rank sites
Getting a link from a high page rank site carries more value than a link from a low page rank site. Page rank value gets passed on to an outbound link from the top level URL. In other words, the home page URL carries most of the value and that's why links from high PR sites are so sought after. If you can you should try and get links from high PR pages - they have even more value.

5. Focus on getting permanent backlinks
The only thing that is worse than not ranking well, is to lose a high rank. It's not uncommon for your site to drop off the SERP's if you lose your backlinks. If you buy links from link services that require a monthly subscription you run the risk of losing your links when you cancel. This will drop all your links and cause your search engine ranking to drop as well.

Don't be blinded by the little green bar that shows your Google page rank. It's notoriously inaccurate and can often be deceiving - especially for low PR sites. Focus instead on building more quality backlinks. In the end every quality link counts and if you are consistent you will increase Google Page Rank, get more traffic and make more money.
